Are You A Bot?
a political Voight-Kampff test
As a combination of digital ethnography and personal manifestation, "ARE YOU A BOT?" is a short film which aimed at detecting political bot accounts on social media platforms. It draws inspiration from the renowned science fiction novel "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" penned by Philip K. Dick, a work subsequently brought to life on the silver screen by Ridley Scott in the form of "Blade Runner." In "Blade Runner," the Voight-Kampff test serves as a means to differentiate between androids and humans, employing a verbal assessment to gauge emotional responses through a series of questions. While the identification of bots may appear to be an insurmountable challenge, this project delves into the fascinating terrain of showcasing how the increasing mechanization of human interactions on social media influences our political perspectives. Notably, over 20 gigabytes of screencasted footage were amassed during the production of this film, with inspiration drawn from a diverse array of sources.
